“…widely regarded as the world’s best chess journalist.”

– Leonard Barden, The Guardian

Background

In 1999, I graduated in Dutch Language & Literature at the University of Amsterdam. Between 2007 and 2013, I ran the website ChessVibes.com, which was then acquired by Chess.com. I was the first ‘vlogger’ of the chess world, making videos at top tournaments a decade before the streamers arrived.

Accolades

For my critical coverage of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) I won the Special Achievements Award of the Chess Journalists of America (CJA) in 2018. In the summer of 2022, The Guardian’s Leonard Barden described me as “widely regarded as the world’s best chess journalist.”

Experience

During almost two decades of covering chess, I interviewed dozens of grandmasters, played basketball with Magnus Carlsen, and interviewed Garry Kasparov at Bobby Fischer’s grave. I am currently the Director of News & Events at Chess.com.

Book

On October 24, 2024, my first book The Chess Revolution was released, with translations into eight languages. It covers chess as a cultural phenomenon, and impact the computer and the Internet had on the game.
